Monastrell

The Mediterranean grape of sun and muscle. Up at altitude, whole-cluster, a different beast.

Monastrell is the great red grape of Spain’s southeast, the same one the French call Mourvèdre and the Californians and Australians call Mataró. Thick skin, late ripening and a tolerance for heat and drought that makes it king in Jumilla, Yecla and Alicante. Hence the reputation: dense, powerful reds, high in alcohol and broad in tannin, proper dry-farmed sunshine wine.

But that reputation only tells half the story. Take it up to altitude, pick it early and work it whole-cluster and Monastrell shows another face: fresh fruit, a floral lift, black pepper and a drinkability nobody credits it with. Somewhere like Manchuela, with chalky soils and cold nights, it stops being a battle tank and turns nimble. Same grape, completely different conversation.
